Additional West Nile Virus Mosquito Samples Collected in Eight York County Municipalities
Since last reported on July 23, 2015, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Vector Management has reported an additional fifty eight new York County mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile Virus in 2015. These samples were collected in Conewago Township(11), East Manchester Township(2), Fairview Township(1), Jackson Township(1), Manchester Township(16), North Codorus Township(1), Penn Township(4), Springettsbury Township(9), Spring Garden Township(4), West Manheim Township(4) and York City(5). Additional enhanced mosquito surveillance, sampling and larval control is being performed by PA DEP and Penn State Extension in these and adjacent municipalities.
County-wide mosquito surveillance is indicating the presence of high mosquito populations throughout York County. We are reminding residents to be responsible citizens and take time to inspect their property and eliminate any sources of stagnant water. One bucket or tire in someone’s backyard can produce hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes in a year. Residents may also purchase a variety of mosquito control and repellent products from most home and garden centers. When outdoors, especially during the evening and night time, be sure to wear an insect repellent.
York County residents can report mosquito concerns through the Pennsylvania West Nile Virus website www.westnile.state.pa.us. Doing so will better assist our program to document areas of concern. Keep in mind that the West Nile Virus Program attempts to educate residents and individuals may need to report neighbor complaints to their local municipality to rectify the concern.

A mosquito spraying event did occur in an area of Manchester Township during the evening of Wednesday, July 22, 2015. This was done to reduce the human risk of West Nile Virus being detected in adult mosquito populations from the area. Mosquito spraying only kills the adult mosquitoes flying at that time. If residents do not clean up and eliminate sources of stagnant water, high mosquito populations will return within a week. The West Nile Virus risk will continue until temperatures drop in October.

County-wide Mosquito Surveillance Starting in York County for 2015
Penn State Extension – York County West Nile Virus Program is starting county-wide mosquito surveillance for the 2015 season. During the 2014 season, adult mosquito trapping in York County collected over 73,000 and included 25 different species. Thanks to cleanup efforts throughout York County, 2014 was the second consecutive year that fewer mosquito populations were detected than the previous year. The most common sources of high mosquito populations in residential areas continue to be from trash and yard clutter. Residents, businesses and municipalities can greatly reduce mosquito concerns and health risk by cleaning up their own property and the local community.
Fourteen years of surveillance in York County indicates that the most common mosquito species in residential areas; the House Mosquito (Culex spp.) and the Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus); are primarily produced from artificial containers left behind by humans. Artificial containers can be something small like a bottle cap to sometimes as large as a swimming pool with shallow water. Additional containers such as tires, buckets, tarps, and roadside trash are preferred by mosquitoes because other predators found in nature that would prey on mosquito larvae are not present. During periods of drought, these containers continue to hold water and produce mosquitoes. One bucket or tire in someone’s backyard can produce hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes in a year.
We also want to remind residents, municipalities and police departments that mosquito traps are not to be confused for explosive devices. Traps are routinely placed throughout York County from April through October to monitor mosquito populations. Traps are labeled with contact information. A flyer is attached with images showing what mosquito traps look like.
York County residents are being asked to report mosquito concerns through the Pennsylvania West Nile Virus website www.westnile.state.pa.us. Doing so will better assist our program to document areas of concern.

- Plowing, blowing, or shoveling ice or snow onto township streets is strictly prohibited. If you pile snow on the street beside your driveway entrance the passing plow will simply deposit the snow back into your entrance. Plow or blow the snow into/onto your property, this will reduce the amount the plow pushes into your entrance.
- Sidewalks – sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after snow stops falling. Do not pile snow between the street and sidewalk, it could be pushed back on the walk by the passing plow.
- Parking Lot Clearing – Dumping snow or ice onto Township Street, Sidewalk, or Public Property, plowing snow across public streets, is strictly prohibited.

East Manchester Township leaf collection 2015
Burning leaves is prohibited.
Collection will begin Monday, November2nd 2015- The best way to handle leaves is to mulch them with a mulching mower, or compost them, and use for landscaping and gardening. If mulching or composting is not an option, leaves can be raked to the curb for pick-up.
- Rake your leaves out as soon as possible. Due to unknown weather
conditions it is impossible to schedule specific days. Our crew will continue moving throughout the township until the last day of pickup. - Place leaves curbside in windrows (long narrow piles), for easier pick-up.
- Leaves only – No sticks, brush, trash or animal waste.
- Last day of pick-up will be Friday, December 4th. Leaf equipment will be removed from trucks and snow equipment installed.

PennDOT Reminds Homeowners to Prepare Mailboxes for Winter
Harrisburg – PennDOT reminds residents living along rural state and local roads that now is the time to prepare mailboxes for the winter months. Snow thrown from plows can easily damage mailboxes that are not prepared.
Mailboxes are normally placed within the state’s legal right-of-way; however, mailbox damage is the responsibility of the property owner.
If a mailbox is placed as far from the edge of the road as the carrier can reach from a vehicle and the mailbox is placed on a sturdy support, it should be able to withstand the force of snow thrown from a plow.
PennDOT offers these tips to help reduce the risk of mailbox damage:
Place a 6- to 8-inch piece of reflective tape on the mailbox to help snow plow operators see it at night.
Remove snow from around the mailbox, but never throw it back onto the road.
If the mailbox is located within the legal right-of-way and damage was experienced in the past, homeowners may want to consider repositioning the mailbox before winter.
Homeowners who have followed these tips in the past and have still experienced mailbox damage may wish to consider installing cantilevered mailbox support that will swing a mailbox out of harm’s way. Visit www.dot.state.pa.us for a copy of plans for a cantilever mailbox support.
